General Information
Students whose native language is not English and whose secondary or higher
education was completed in a country where English is not the native
language must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The
minimum scores for admission to UC Berkeley are 550 on the paper-based TOEFL
or 213 on the computer-based TOEFL. Most applicants to UC Berkeley achieve
scores that are much higher than the minimum requirement. Test results must
be received in the Office of Undergraduate Admission and Relations with
Schools no later than January prior to the fall semester for which the
student wishes to enroll. The SAT I: Reasoning Tests and SAT II: Subject
Tests are required of all international freshman applicants. SAT tests are
not required for transfer applicants. The SAT II: Subject Tests (total of
three tests) must be completed in the areas of Writing, Mathematics (Level
I, Level IC or Level IIC), and a third test in one of the following areas:
English literature, foreign language, science, or social studies.
Engineering applicants should take Mathematics Level IIC and the third SAT
II subject test in a physical science. International students will need
approximately $30,000 to cover expenses for one year at UC Berkeley. Tuition
